Amid immigration tensions, Nigel Farage proposes mass deportations
Following a heated summer of debate over the accommodation of asylum seekers across the Channel, the right-wing populist leader sought to put the Labour government under pressure with a series of explosive proposals presented on August 26.
“Finally, a politician who has gotten the message,” exults the Daily Mail tabloid . Right-wing populist leader Nigel Farage presented an “unprecedented” list of measures on Tuesday, August 26, aimed at reducing illegal immigration in the United Kingdom. In particular, arrivals via the Channel – numbering 30,000 since the beginning of the year – “are a source of deep anger among the population,” the popular right-wing newspaper claims.
“ In his vindictive style, Farage has prescribed a drastic remedy for the country to stem the crisis,” points out the conservative tabloid The Sun. Among the suggestions put forward by the MP for Clacton-on-Sea: the deportation of 600,000 illegal immigrants over five years, a waiver of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees, not to mention a proposal for financial assistance for return and the signing of return agreements, including with certain dictatorial regimes such as the Afghan Taliban (which have said they are ready to accept).
“This is the first time that such a high-profile political leader [Reform UK is leading in voting intentions] has addressed the issue of illegal immigration flows in such clear and unequivocal terms,” says The Daily Telegraph .
