Ancy-Dornot. The wanderings of the sub-prefect of Metz in ancient lands

9:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 6, in the deserted parking lot of the Fenottes market hall in Ancy-Dornot. The park is empty. Not a human in sight. Only a few birds and the constant traffic passing on the nearby D6 break the silence. A small red car stops. It's Gilles Soulier, the mayor of the town of 1,474 inhabitants. He's wearing a blue suit. "I'm waiting for the sub-prefect to visit. I don't really know why he's coming, but I'm delighted to have him," says the independent councilor, elected in 2008. He only knows that Richard Smith, state representative for the Metz district, has asked him to see the Fenottes market hall and meet a local entrepreneur.
