Breidenbach. A two-kilometer maze in the cornfields

The July downpours didn't just cause unhappiness. On the heights of Olsberg, in Breidenbach, they boosted the growth of the corn fields. "It started off very badly," observes Richard Fouchs of the Kleinwald farm. "Then in mid-July, it took off suddenly," allowing the farm to offer a maze in the corn fields after a two-year hiatus . "Last year, growth was poor . Two years ago, we had to let the land rest."

The maze will be open every Sunday, starting August 10th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., for €4 for adults and €2 for children. The principle remains unchanged: find the exit, but above all, the eight puzzles scattered throughout the fields . "There will be three levels of difficulty: very hard, medium, and for children. For each level, a winner will be chosen by drawing lots." Allow 1 to 1.5 hours to complete the two-kilometer maze. "I have a cutting logic, but I also try to be a little devious in my layouts" to make the crossing more difficult. "Inside, it's still complicated to find your way around. Everything looks the same."
A quarter of the course has already been completed and tested by groups of children from the after-school program. "The entire thing will be finished this week." Richard Fouchs first took an aerial shot with a drone, before tackling the 60-70 cm wide route with a disc cutter, "then with a hand-held brush cutter or tractor to remove the roots." The maze is modified each time. "To avoid unnecessarily cutting the rows that are beautiful, we try to use the slightly empty, lower sections. We adapt to the field." The corn stalks measure between 1.80 and 2.20 m.

In previous years, the Kleinwald farm has welcomed an average of between 1,000 and 1,200 visitors . A fun way to discover the family farm, the products and the ice cream section. Every Sunday, it is also possible to have lunch on site (farmhouse burger and pierrade) from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., without interruption. On average, the Fouchs family records between 40 and 60 meals per weekend.
The maze will remain open until the corn harvest, probably in October. Richard Fouchs hasn't ruled out adding late-night openings on Saturday nights. A different atmosphere...
