By-election in Burgundy: the right claims victory over the RN

Sébastien Martin won the legislative elections in the 5th constituency of Saône-et-Loire, with 60% of the vote, compared to 40% for RN MP Arnaud Sanvert.
By Le Parisien with AFPSébastien Martin, the miscellaneous right-wing candidate (ex-LR) , claimed victory in the Saône-et-Loire legislative by-election this Sunday to the AFP, against RN MP Arnaud Sanvert , whose election in 2024 had been invalidated .
"It is with immense pride and deep gratitude that I announce my victory in the legislative elections in the 5th constituency of Saône-et-Loire," he declared in a message sent to AFP, assuring that he had received around 60% of the vote, compared to 40% for Arnaud Sanvert.
"I will be a free representative because the only ones I owe anything to in this election are the residents of this constituency," added Sébastien Martin, president of Grand Chalon and vice-president of the department.
Sébastien Martin immediately received "congratulations," on X, from Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Republican Right group in the National Assembly, of which LR is a member and which Sébastien Martin has promised to join, even though he has not renewed his LR membership card. "The entire Republican Right group is proud to welcome you," added Laurent Wauquiez.
Sébastien Martin, 47, has been a parliamentary attaché, ministerial advisor, and consultant. He received 25.6% of the vote in the first round, placing second, much better than the 19% obtained by Gilles Platret, the former LR mayor of Chalon-sur-Saône who led the 2024 legislative election campaign and who, this time, ceded the top spot to Sébastien Martin while supporting him.
Sébastien Martin has consistently believed in a surge of right-wing momentum, following the LR's victories in recent by-elections and the election of its new president, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau. He also appears to have benefited greatly from the numerous calls for a broad Republican front.
Having failed this time to unite, unlike in 2024, the divided left failed to reach the second round: LFI candidate Fatima Kouriche only received 8.2% in the first round, a far cry from her 23% in the first round of 2024, while PS candidate Clément Mugnier came third with 17%.
Both had called for a blockade of the RN, as had the mayor of Montceau-les-Mines, Marie-Claude Jarrot, also a former LR member now with Horizons, who only received 12% in the first round.
Faced with this reserve of votes available to Sébastien Martin, the RN Arnaud Sanvert, 41 years old, could hardly hope for anything other than a surge in participation in his favor, which was not the case.
