European Parliament: New financial scandal targets the National Rally

European Parliament: New financial scandal targets the National Rally

Reading time: 1 min - video: 3 min

The National Rally is the target of a new case of misappropriation of public funds to the detriment of the European Parliament. The "Identity and Democracy" group, of which the National Rally was a member during the previous term, is suspected of irregular spending amounting to at least €4 million.

The National Rally is once again suspected by the European Parliament of embezzling funds. This time, it's the Le Pen group of MEPs who are accused of setting up an illegal system to finance associations in their constituency. The problem: the money allegedly came from a fund intended for the parliamentary group's operations and should never have been used for associations.

This is the subject of a report obtained by our colleagues at Le Monde and German public television. It accuses the group to which the RN MEPs belong of having illegally spent a little over 4.3 million euros in total. "This is not a single big case, but rather a multitude of small cases. Surprisingly, it is somewhat in line with what we have already seen previously, particularly in France in the Marine Le Pen affair, and it seems to have continued," said Niclas Herbst, president (CDU) of the European Union's Budgetary Control Committee.
