It's a safe bet that, from the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, Vladimir Putin is watching with great attention the summit of the 32 leaders of the member countries of the Atlantic military alliance (NATO) taking place this Wednesday in The Hague, Netherlands. For European democracies, who fear that, following Ukraine, Russia will attack an EU neighbor within five years, the stakes are existential.

Essentially, it's about convincing Donald Trump , the president of the United States, on whom most people depend for their own security, to confirm that the world's leading power would honor the famous Article 5 of the NATO treaty . The latter is supposed to commit each country to protecting each other in the event of an external attack.
