The Netanyahu government's response has been to seek to eliminate Hamas, a logical defensive response. In reality, the war in Gaza, in its scale and duration, has far exceeded this objective and has taken the form of collective punishment for the 2.1 million Palestinians (as of January, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics) who live in the enclave, often for generations.
