Gérald Darmanin, Keeper of the Seals and Minister of Justice, was a guest on the 4V program on Tuesday, May 13, the day after his letter to magistrates to combat prison overcrowding.

Gérald Darmanin has written to magistrates proposing several measures to simplify the justice system by 2027. Among these proposals is the removal of suspended sentences from the Penal Code. Suspended sentences "can still work for a certain number of people who understand court decisions," believes the Minister of Justice, a guest on Les 4 Vérités on Tuesday, May 13.

"I prefer that words have meaning at the Ministry of Justice. When people are sentenced to prison, let them go to prison," he elaborates. Instead, probation sentences could be proposed. "We put an electronic tag on you, we impose community service on you, we impose unpaid work on you, and if you don't comply (...) then we put you in prison," says Gérald Darmanin. The minister wants to open the debate to "simplify the Penal Code and make it much more effective for the French people."
