He claims to have received around 60% of the vote, compared to 40% for his rival. Right-wing candidate Sébastien Martin (formerly LR) claimed victory to AFP on Sunday, May 25, in the Saône-et-Loire legislative by-election, against RN MP Arnaud Sanvert. "It is with immense pride and deep gratitude that I announce my victory in the legislative elections in the 5th constituency of Saône-et-Loire," he said in a message to AFP.
RN member Arnaud Sanvert, a former night receptionist, won 41% of the vote in July, but his election was annulled due to counting irregularities . He had benefited from a three-way race with LFI candidate Fatima Kouriche (31.5%), the Union of the Left, and the far-right mayor of Chalon-sur-Saône, Gilles Platret (28%). The latter, a former LR who once flirted with the far right, had sparked a heated controversy by refusing to withdraw.
This time, only two candidates were able to remain in the second round: Arnaud Sanvert, who received 32% last Sunday, and Sébastien Martin, president of Grand Chalon and vice-president of the department, who promised to sit with LR in the National Assembly, even though he did not renew his party card.
