A guest on RTL, the chairman of the National Assembly's finance committee, Éric Coquerel (LFI), believes that François Bayrou, deprived of a majority in the National Assembly, "will certainly need Article 49.3 to pass (the) budget in the autumn."
As a result, "there will likely be a motion of censure," the rebel promises, hoping that it "will pass." This would lead not only to the budget being rejected, but also to the government being overthrown, as was the case with Michel Barnier on December 4.
"In reality, it is less today than in the fall that things will be decisive," concludes Éric Coquerel.
The situation was already quite delicate for François Bayrou, but it is surely even more so after Emmanuel Macron's speech on Sunday. Speaking to the Armed Forces, the head of state announced his intention to increase the planned budgetary effort for Defense by €3.5 billion in 2026, adding another line to François Bayrou's budget.
The objective of François Bayrou's government is to reduce the deficit to 4.6% of GDP next year, compared to 5.8% in 2024. This is a difficult equation to achieve, given the limited financial and political room for maneuver for the executive, which cannot rely on a majority in the National Assembly.
Moreover, this comes in a volatile and uncertain international context, as US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the imposition of 30% customs duties on the European Union starting August 1.
