Bruno Retailleau and Laurent Wauquiez are throwing their last forces into the battle. The Minister of the Interior regretted, on Thursday, May 15, that France had not established "a sufficiently strong balance of power" with Algeria on people under OQTF. "Things are not working well with Algeria," he acknowledged on LCI , mentioning "other measures to be taken," without detailing them. LR activists must decide between the two candidates on May 17 and 18.

Furthermore, in an interview with Le Figaro , even before members had chosen the new LR president, Laurent Wauquiez had already announced the return match for the designation of the right-wing presidential candidate. "In a year, we will choose the best: if it is Bruno Retailleau, I will give him my full support; if it is me, we will do it as a team," he predicted, limiting the choice of the presidential candidate at LR to members, just like the Minister of the Interior.
