Refusal to comply: B. Retailleau systematizes car chases

Reading time: 1 min - video: 1 min

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is now calling for systematic prosecution of drivers who refuse to comply, which was not the case under the previous procedure. This scourge is recorded every twenty minutes.

Don't let offenders escape, even if it means driving at full speed in the city center and risking an accident. From now on, high-speed chases are becoming the rule, not the exception. This instruction has just been given to all police officers and gendarmes in France. The government's objective: to curb the phenomenon of refusals to comply: 24,900 last year , or more than one every 30 minutes.

Until now, high-speed chases were only systematically used for very serious incidents, when the driver was an armed individual or a dangerous criminal. Police unions have long been calling for greater freedom of intervention, but they remain cautious. “ Behind this, we will need support because if there is a disaster, it is always the police officer who will pay the price ,” warns Jean-Christophe Couvy, National Secretary of the Unité SGP Police FO union. Before pursuing, law enforcement must always assess the danger to themselves and to citizens.
