Reading time: 1 min - video: 2 min

Far-right candidate George Simion came out on top in the first round of Romania's presidential election, with 40% of the vote. In the second round, he will face the mayor of Bucharest, a pro-European centrist. Here's a portrait of a man who claims to draw inspiration from Giorgia Meloni and Donald Trump.

In Romania, the nationalist George Simion obtained more than 40% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election, twice as many as the pro-European candidate who qualified for the second round. A tidal wave, and a victory speech with populist overtones, in which the Romanian candidate notably criticized the press, on Sunday, May 4.

His campaign focused on social media. The politician filmed himself in Washington with Elon Musk in the background, before posing with ultra-nationalist Steve Bannon, or alongside Marion Maréchal and Donald Trump's eldest son. On the war in Ukraine, George Simion aligned himself with the American president, calling for a halt to arms shipments to its neighbors. Romania is vital for Kyiv: it's the transit point for grain, and the country is home to NATO's largest military base.
