September 10th Movement: SUD-Rail calls for a massive strike, CGT-Cheminots is considering it

Several citizens' groups, joined by unions and supported by left-wing parties, are calling for a "blockade of everything" to protest against the government's cost-cutting measures.
By Le Parisien with AFPSUD-Rail, the third largest railway workers' union, called this Thursday for a "massive strike" on September 10 , a day of mobilization against the government's cost-cutting measures .
"September 10: we are blocking everything in the railway sector," warned SUD-Rail in a press release, calling for a "massive strike" against what it described as "social regression" following the "announcements of the Prime Minister" on July 15.
Several citizens' groups, joined by unions and supported by left-wing parties, have called for a "total shutdown" in France on September 10 in response to the nearly €44 billion in savings sought by François Bayrou in the 2026 budget.
" The proposed abolition of the two public holidays is a symbol of the contempt the Bayrou government has for us," SUD-Rail argued, for example.
Regarding the rail sector, "the Minister of Transport (...) has already set the tone for this budgetary rigour (...) while it is essential to increase the State budget by at least 1.5 billion (euros) for the rail network," the union estimated.
On the side of the CGT-Cheminots, the largest union in terms of representativeness, "the debate" on a possible strike will take place "next week", but "no decision has been taken at the moment", declared the general secretary, Thierry Nier.
Nothing has been decided either by UNSA-Ferroviaire, the second-largest railway workers' union, according to general secretary Fabrice Charrière, who has postponed the decision on whether or not to strike "until September 1st." When contacted, the SNCF was unable to immediately comment.
