Summer University of the Insoumis: Jean-Luc Mélenchon calls for a general strike on September 10

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise (La France Insoumise) party, called for a "general strike" on Friday, August 22, during the planned blockade on September 10, hoping that this popular protest movement would help bring down François Bayrou's government.
"September 10 must be a day of general blockade, that is to say, as far as employees are concerned, September 10 must be a general strike," declared the founder of LFI during a speech at the summer universities of the radical left movement.
"We need a general strike on September 10 because on September 23, we will submit a motion of censure to bring down François Bayrou's government," he added in front of thousands of activists.
"September 10th could be a step, but we obviously need to build other perspectives," he also declared, saying he was "100% in agreement" on this subject with the head of the CGT, Sophie Binet, who was nevertheless more cautious about this mobilization.
Born on social media, the "Block Everything" movement calling for a mobilization on September 10 received support from France Insoumise, the Ecologists, the communists and then the socialists.
Several unions, including the CGT and Force Ouvrière, will hold internal meetings next week to decide on actions, while several union federations are joining the call to "block everything" on September 10.
"Nobody knows how it all started, but thousands of people joined it from the outset. What everyone knows is that from the outset, citizens' assemblies were created and that more will be created," declared Jean-Luc Mélenchon about this protest movement, whose outlines are still unclear and which is demanding, in particular, more tax justice and a rejection of the Bayrou plan for France's 2026 budget.
But the three-time presidential candidate was keen to dismiss any accusations of political "recuperation," as the Insoumis (Rebellious Insoumis) were the quickest to call for support for these calls for blockades and strikes. "Our strategy is to help and serve the movement," Jean-Luc Mélenchon insisted.
