Why does the President of the Republic have lunch with cardinals?

Contrary to allegations in some parts of the Italian press, Emmanuel Macron, by having lunch on April 26 in Rome with four of the five French cardinals, had no intention of influencing the vote. Nor did he intend to do so by meeting with the founder of the Sant'Egidio community, which is influential in the Vatican.
Moreover, the 133 cardinals who will be cloistered in the Sistine Chapel from Wednesday 7 May will have before their eyes, apart from Michelangelo's paintings and according to the reference document established by John Paul II, only the concern "for the glory of God and the good of the Church" .
They will not be able to let themselves be pushed by "the intervention of personalities or pressure groups" . Thus, it is just as a favor that an American conservative site gave each of them a document with their portraits and a note on their choice and their positions on questions under debate, etc. It is clear. But why is the President of the Republic having lunch with cardinals these days? To talk about football, ecclesiastical fashion?
