A major study claims to finally reveal the true number of steps we need to take each day to stay healthy. It appears that 7,000 steps is enough to significantly reduce the risk of developing many diseases.
How many times should you put one foot in front of the other to be healthy? The goal of 10,000 steps a day originated in a 1960s advertising campaign for a Japanese pedometer. And, of course, its scientific basis is regularly questioned.
Today, researchers are suggesting that 7,000 steps a day is enough to significantly reduce health risks. “To reach this conclusion, the team reviewed the results of 57 studies conducted over the past eleven years, which cross-referenced health status with the number of steps taken daily,” reports the British website IFLS .
Unlike previous research, which had smaller numbers of participants and did not allow for a clear conclusion, their study, published in the journal The Lancet Public Health , analyzed the health data of more than 160,000 adults. These adults “wore pedometers or other step-counting devices, which allowed the researchers to see how much an extra 1,000 steps had an impact on health,” IFLS said.
The authors found that those who walked an average of 7,000 steps a day had a lower
