51-year-old player mistakenly selected

Nanne Ruuskanen was unable to face either Belarus or Serbia.
It was a huge mishap that marred the final phase of the Women's Nations League. For the last two matches played this week, against Belarus (3-0 victory) and Serbia (1-1), Finnish coach Outi Saarinen called up Stina Ruuskanen, instead of Nanne Ruuskanen.
However, Stina is a 51-year-old former player (2 caps in 1996), now retired, and who has reluctantly taken the place of Nanne (23 years old), who currently plays for Djurgardens.
Confused and embarrassed, Saarinen apologized after the match against Serbia. "Nanne was obviously disappointed, but she took the news very well given the circumstances," the coach explained. As for Stina Ruuskanen, she honored her call-up, but was asked to remain in the stands.
"I received a message from a friend who explained the situation to me. It was really funny. At the same time, it's of course sad for Nanne that she can't play because of this. I don't know why my name suddenly appeared on the list after so many years," the surprise guest joked, declaring with humor that she was "ready if another call comes."
Finland, second in the final standings of Group 4 of League B of the Nations League, will be one of the Swiss opponents at the next Euro in Switzerland (July 2-27). The two teams will face off in Geneva on July 10 (9 p.m.) in the third match of the group stage.
