The roar that erupted from the stands at London's Wembley Stadium on Sunday, August 10, as Justin Devenny's penalty hit Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker's net was a testament to the significance of the moment for Crystal Palace fans. "Glad All Over ," a 1960s song by The Dave Clark Five, echoed through the stands: "And I feel happy all over/Yes, I'm happy all over/ (...) I'm so glad that you're mine." This sealed a victory against one of the most prestigious clubs in the country and Europe (2-2, 3-2 on penalties) and, most importantly, brought the Community Shield, only the second major trophy for this centuries-old team from the south London suburbs.

The Eagles had already gleaned the first just a few months earlier, at Wembley, against another giant: Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. On May 17, Oliver Glasner's men won the FA Cup and the FA Cup 1-0, opening the doors to this duel against the league winners, the Reds . Yet it was the latter who dictated the tempo in the match. Or, at the very least, the score, forcing Crystal Palace to equalize twice, in the first and second half.

Very active on the transfer market, Liverpool had chosen to line up its four summer recruits at the kickoff of the match. And with the game barely underway, two of them stood out: the Frenchman Hugo Ekitike, assisted by the German Florian Wirtz, beat the vigilance of goalkeeper Dean Henderson (0-1, 4th ). A penalty from Jean-Philippe Mateta, after a foul by Virgil van Dijk, allowed the Eagles to equalize (1-1, 17th ).

Three penalty kicks missed by the Reds

The joy was short-lived: four minutes later, another of the Reds' newcomers, Jeremie Frimpong, found the net – with a bit of luck – (1-2, 20th ). It was quite symbolic, as at that moment the Liverpool fans were singing at the top of their lungs in memory of the Portuguese Diogo Jota, who died with his brother André Silva in a road accident in Spain on July 3. A minute's silence – marred by the disrespect of some spectators – was observed before the match. Banners were also displayed in the stands to pay tribute to the striker, whose number 20 was even retired by the club, a first in its 133-year history.

It took until the second half for the Eagles to take the lead, before equalizing thanks to former Marseille player Ismaïla Sarr, who was sent behind a poorly aligned Liverpool defense (2-2, 77th ). In a Community Shield that was played without extra time, the match ended on penalties, as was the case in the two previous editions. Misses from Mohamed Salah, over the top, then from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, against an impressive Dean Henderson, allowed Crystal Palace to take a breather, until this saving shot from Justin Devenny and this explosion of joy from the fans.

Liverpool will begin their Premier League title defense on Friday, August 15, at 9 p.m., with a home game against Bournemouth. Crystal Palace will begin their campaign on Sunday, August 17, at 4 p.m., at Chelsea.
