The Lebrun brothers continue their journey in doubles at the World Table Tennis Championships

The Lebrun brothers continue their journey in doubles at the World Table Tennis Championships

After an excellent start to the competition for the French team, the third day of the World Table Tennis Championships, held in Doha (Qatar), was more mixed. On Monday, May 19, Félix and Alexis Lebrun made no bones about it against the Iranian pair of 15-year-old Benyamin Faraji and 19-year-old Amirmahdi Keshavarzi. In three one-sided sets, the Montpellier table tennis players displayed seriousness and power to eliminate their uncoordinated opponents in... twelve minutes, 11-4, 11-5, and 11-0.

The world number 1s in the discipline, who have only conceded 9 points, thus go through to the round of 16, without doubt and without expending energy, after their first round scare – they were led 2 sets to 0 against the Spanish pair Perez-Berzosa, before winning – and while Alexis Lebrun is returning from a hand injury.

While the Lebrun brothers dominated their match, there was no real feat for the French mixed doubles team. On Monday, 30-year-old Simon Gauzy and 20-year-old Prithika Pavade faced the world's number one pair for a spot in the round of 16 of the tournament. But China's Shidong Lin and Man Kuai played a perfect match. Dominated in the first set, lost 11-4, Simon Gauzy and Prithika Pavade tried to respond in the second set, but committed too many unforced errors to snatch the set (11-8), before losing in three sets (11-3). They therefore leave the tournament at the round of 16 stage.

In mixed doubles, the French team still has a chance of qualifying with the pair Thibault Poret and Léana Hochart, who will play against the Poles Samuel Kulczycki and Zuzanna Wielgos for a place in the round of 16 at 3 p.m. (Paris time).

In the women's draw, French players Jian Nan Yuan and Prithika Pavade will face Japanese players Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara at 4:20 p.m. In the men's doubles, Florian Bourrassaud and Esteban Dorr will face Austrian-Romanian pair Maciej Kolodziejczyk and Vladislav Ursu at 5:40 p.m. The competition can be followed live on RMC Sport's Twitch and YouTube channels.
