Tour de France 2025: summary of the seventh stage, won by Tadej Pogacar, back in yellow

Already a winner in Rouen on Tuesday, July 8, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) did it again. The Slovenian won on Friday in Mûr-de-Bretagne (Côtes-d'Armor), proving the strongest in the final hundred meters of the climb before beating his Danish rival Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) in a sprint. Briton Oscar Onley (Picnic-PostNL) completed the podium. The three-time winner of the race also regained the yellow jersey, which he had relinquished on Thursday to Mathieu Van der Poel ( Alpecin-Deceuninck). In the general classification, he finished ahead of Belgian Remco Evenepoel (+54 s) and Frenchman Kévin Vauquelin (+1 min 11 s).

What to remember

A second ascent of Mûr-de-Bretagne, an explosive sprint finish, a 19th Tour de France victory, and a stage mastered from A to Z: Tadej Pogacar is, unsurprisingly, the day's star. And it's probably not the last time...

Under a bright sun, the seventh stage of the Tour de France was devoured at full speed by the peloton, which rode at an average speed of 50 km/h during the first two hours of the race.

A group of five riders consisting of Alex Baudin (EF Education-Easypost), Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), Ivan Garcia Cortina (Movistar), Marco Haller (Tudor), and Ewen Costiou (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) initially broke away. This breakaway had a lead of just under two minutes over the peloton. Ewen Costiou put up the most resistance, but was eventually caught by the group of favorites with 12 kilometers to go.

As expected, victory was decided on the double climb of Mûr-de-Bretagne, from which a group of eight riders emerged. Pogacar, well led by his teammate Jhonatan Narvaez, finally launched the final sprint 200 meters from the finish, crossing the line in first place, ahead of Jonas Vingegaard.

That's the number of places lost in the general classification by Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who was dropped on the final climb and stripped of the yellow jersey after crossing the line more than a minute behind. The winner at the last Tour finish in Mûr-de-Bretagne in 2021, the Dutchman was not there this time, paying for his efforts the day before. He dropped to fourth place in the general classification, behind Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels).

"This start to the Tour de France should serve me well for the future. My reputation in the peloton already allows me to be placed further up the peloton, which allows me to play a leading role every time."

Kevin Vauquelin, speaking to France Télévisions. Still in contact with the leaders at the top of Mûr-de-Bretagne, the Frenchman climbed back to third place in the general classification.

Fine sandy beaches, the fortifications of Saint-Malo and riders playing at being privateers: the "postcard" stage was pleasant, without however reaching the top of our rating scale, which extends from A to E. The solitary breakaway of Breton Ewen Costiou, then the final battle between the leaders in the climb of Mûr-de-Bretagne allow us to award a good "B" to this day.
