Holidays in Charente-Maritime: the Saintes arenas get a makeover

This primordial place became secondary when the city withdrew behind a rampart during the 3rd- 4th centuries. Until being abandoned, serving as a quarry, a place of pasture, a promenade... The historic monument owes its rebirth to renovation work undertaken at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the ravages of time and water infiltration have led the municipality to carry out a new colossal restoration project for the past three years. The first two phases, the restoration of the Gate of the Living then the Gate of the Dead, have been completed. By the end of 2025, the arena will still need to be cleaned up. But, already, the amphitheater has regained its splendor. And the break in the work has made way for a new visitor route.
In July and August, activities are scheduled: guided tours every day at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., flight above depending on the weather, from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 1:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. (immersive drone experience), Roman games for families and ancient construction techniques... On July 26, a concert by the Charentes Youth Orchestra will be given. A Sites en scène show will take place on August 14 and 15 while a blues concert will be given on August 17.

And why not explore this city of art and history from its river? In Saintes, cruises on the Charente are organized aboard the "Bernard Palissy III," a silent electric-solar boat. The tourist office also rents "e-boats," small electric boats without a license, allowing you to sail freely for an hour.
