Newcastle Building Society opens new giant super branch

Newcastle Building Society opens new giant super branch

Updated:

Newcastle Building Society has opened a new super-branch in Newcastle city centre.

Spread over 10,000sqft and spanning five floors, it is the building society's biggest ever branch and one of the biggest in Britain.

The new branch occupies a former French Connection in a 200-year old Grade-II listed building.

It comes as high street banks are closing across the country.

More than 6,300 branches have been shuttered across the UK over the past 10 years, so the new branch bucks the trend of bank branches closing.

Newcastle's newest branch offer sa full range of banking services and face-to-face financial advice as well as free-to use spaces for events which will be offered to charities and community groups.

He said: 'Our members repeatedly tell us that they want the option of having a trusted, friendly conversation about their money, rather than being forced to solely manage their finances online.

Having accessible financial services in the heart of Newcastle and across our regions opens the door to better financial outcomes for many more.'

This approach has seen Newcastle Building Society's branch network beat the market average for savings balances.

Between January and April 2025 Newcastle Building Society savings balances grew at a rate more than double the market average according to the mutual.

Newcastle Building Society currently offers easy-access and fixed-rate savings accounts, Isas as well as mortgage products and loans

On hand to open the new branch were former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi and North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness.

McGuinness said: 'High streets are closing down and community focal points are disappearing at too many locations across the North East.

'This new flagship branch is exactly what our high streets need: spaces and services to help the communities they serve thrive'

More than 6,300 branches have been shuttered over the past 10 years, so the new branch bucks the trend
