Neighbours stars film final scenes of soap as boss teases 'future chapter'

The cast of legendary soap opera Neighbours have paid tribute as they filmed their last ever scenes on the iconic show. After 40 years production has officially wrapped on the Australian series, which was rebooted by Prime Video in Spetember 2023 after it was cancelled by 5 in 2022. The cast spent their last day shooting at Nunawading studios on July 10. However, although the final episodes are due to air this coming December, Executive Producer Jason Herbison hinted this may not be the end.

"Neighbours is a special show and it's been a privilege to make the recent seasons for our loyal viewers around the world. We have added 460 episodes to our legacy of over 9000 episodes, something we all feel proud of. Once again, we will be resting the residents of Ramsay Street on a hopeful note, with some tantalising possibilities for a future chapter,” he teased.

The show, which made staras of Kylie Minogue andJason donovan in the 80s and lauched the careers of Hollywood stars Guy Pearce and Margot Robbie, was previously saved after being axed in 2022 when Amazon stepped in and gave it a home on their Freevee app.

However the streaer is closing down Freevee in August 2025 and Amazon is consolodating it's content to their main Prime Video brand which has led to the legendary soap's cancellation for the second time.

The show's stars paid tribute to the long running drama as they poignantly gathered for one final group shot in the sunshine.

Stefan Dennis, who has played businessman Paul Robinson on and off since the very first episode of the show in 1984 said: “I never thought a single show would give me the greatest adventures of my career, spanning 40 years. Without Neighbours I would not have met the people, been to the places and lived the experiences of a lifetime. Thank you all.”

Alan Fletcher who plays Dr Karl Kennedy shared: “Neighbours has been my happy place for over 30 years. I will always treasure the creative freedom and enthusiasm amongst the whole team that has allowed us to produce a brilliant show for so long.”

Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy) chimed in:“It’s impossible to measure the gratitude I feel for the gift of 30 years on Neighbours. To do so, I would have to calculate the number of extraordinary cast and crew I have been privileged to work with, count the number of laughs I have shared with them, and measure the pride I feel for the diverse, dramatic (and sometimes outrageous!) storytelling we have all been a part of. We are the best version of ‘family’. It has been a wild ride into a happy life. Wouldn’t change it for quids!”

Meanwhile, Annie Jones, who returned to the show as Jane Harris for the supposed final episodes on Channel 5 in 2022 before joining the reboot, gushed: "Neighbours has been a part of my life for most of it, and I’m grateful that it has been. It’s been a pleasure and a delight to work with such a talented group of people who embrace every challenging episode with enthusiasm and dedication. I’ll miss not being a part of the machine that is Neighbours.”

Rebekah Elmaloglou, who has played Terese Willis since 2013, having previously appeared in rival soap Home and Away, also shared her feelings. Neighbours is a fine example of commitment. I’ve had to pinch myself every day. I’ve loved every minute of it. The friendships, the laughter, the tears and the early mornings and the craziness of playing a character that never tires me …”
