Celtic Striker's Brother Wins Man Of The Match As Sligo Club End 33 Year Drought

Shamrock Gaels are Sligo senior football champions for the first time since 1992, and it was Ciaran Kenny, brother of Celtic striker Johnny Kenny, who stole the show on a historic day for the club.
With Markievicz Park out of action, the replay was played at the west Sligo venue of Quigabar. Shamrock Gaels produced a stunning second-half performance to defeat reigning Connacht champions Coolera/Strandhill, 2-11 to 0-8, in the 2025 Sligo SFC final.
Kenny, who lined out at centre back, delivered a tireless and composed display throughout, linking play, driving his team forward at key moments, and managing to get his name on the scoresheet. His efforts earned him the Man of the Match award as the Gaels claimed only their third-ever county senior football title.
The first half was a dour affair as the two sides managed only two points apiece in windy conditions. County man Niall Murphy missing a penalty for Coolera/Strandhill in the early stages. Murphy kicked his side's entire tally, finishing up with eight points on the day.
Shamrock Gaels produced a remarkable come back in the first game, trailing by five points in injury time before a David Quinn penalty and a two point free from the same man rescued them from defeat but this time it was them making the running and they made sure not to let their lead slip.
A Kenny Family AffairThe match was a proud day for the Kenny household, as Ciaran’s brothers Patrick and Niall also featured in the final for Shamrock Gaels, capping off a famous family outing in the club’s colours.
It also marked another chapter in a remarkable sporting dynasty. Their father, Johnny Kenny Snr, is a local legend in his own right, having lined out for Sligo at senior inter-county football level and represented Sligo Rovers and Finn Harps in the League of Ireland.
Now, with Johnny Jr. playing for Celtic and representing Ireland, it’s clear the Kenny name is firmly etched in Sligo sporting history, across both codes.
