Donal Óg Warns Limerick Fans After His RTÉ Analysis Is Interrupted

Donal Óg Warns Limerick Fans After His RTÉ Analysis Is Interrupted

Tell the world, Limerick are back. Kiely's men came roaring back into form in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship on Sunday, hammering a well-fancied Cork 3-26 to 1-16 on a scorching day at the Gaelic Grounds.

It was their Munster rivals, Cork, who had been receiving all the praise, the adulation, and the tips, but in the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, it was Limerick's day.

John Kiely's men came racing out of their home blocks ferociously. Within three minutes, relentless pressure and an Aaron Gillane goal had them leading by five. When the clock showed 20 the gap had become nine, and by the time they trotted down the tunnel, it had become 15.

While Cork showed mere glimpses of rebellion and resurgence with the wind at their back in the second 35, the damage was done. All Pat Ryan's men could do was prevent further demolition. In some ways, they succeeded; Limerick would outscore them by just a point in the second half. All-in-all, though, it was a humiliating defeat for a Cork side who had travelled to Limerick with so much promise.

Donal Óg awestruck by Limerick 'machine' in Gaelic Grounds

After watching his native county get utterly dismantled, all Donal Óg Cusack could muster was awe at the Limerick 'machine' that proved superior to Cork in every area of the field on Sunday.

Speaking on RTÉ after the clash, Donal Óg insisted that things were far from over for Pat Ryan's Cork, but paid tribute to a Limerick side who were 'up for the fight everywhere'.

The game is the game. I don't think anybody expected that Limerick were going to beat Cork by this amount today, but from a Cork point of view the war is far from over. They'll just have to go back, take this beating and all the learnings.

It has to be said...this Limerick team, have we ever seen a better team than them? What a machine they looked like today, so well engineered, resilient, strong, every part is working and up for the fight everywhere.

As Donal Óg glittered the home side with praise, the evidence of Limerick's fight remained to be seen long after the final whistle. Hordes of Limerick's faithful had engulfed the field and closed in on RTÉ's punditry box, drowning out the Corkonian's analysis with raucous cries.

"And as you can see, they're up for the fight, still behind us," joked Donal Óg as his segment was interrupted. Not abandoning the Cork within him, Cusack couldn't help but turn and deliver the roaring crowd a short warning.

There's a long year yet there folks.

"There is a long season yet. But this Limerick team, have we ever seen a better team?"

Far from gone away is right. Sunday's epic showing was that of a sleeping giant, now awoken, and a genuine All-Ireland contender, maybe even a favourite.

Limerick now lead the Munster Senior Hurling Championship on five points, level with Tipperary but 25 points ahead on score difference.
