Mayo Legend Makes Shock Coaching Move After Recent Inter-County Exit

Mayo Legend Makes Shock Coaching Move After Recent Inter-County Exit

With the start of club championship season just around the corner, a number of sides around the country have made interesting additions to the squads.

That is certainly true when it comes to playing personnel, with Conor Carroll and Pat Spillane Jr involved in high profile transfers in Roscommon and Sligo respectively.

It is also likely that we will see some coaching changes. We already had reports of one this week, with Stephen Rochford linking up with Offaly side Tullamore after his recent departure from the Mayo setup.

As it turns out, he may not be the only high profile figure in Mayo to join a new club.

Liam McHale recently left his role as Mayo Ladies manager, stepping aside after the county just about avoided relegation. He has now apparently linked up with a new side.

The Mayo News are reporting that Liam McHale has taken up a role with Mayo club Ardnaree Sarsfields, having taken training with the team earlier this week.

This news is likely to raise some eyebrows in the county, with McHale a clubman of Ardnaree Sarsfields' crosstown rivals Ballina Stephenites.

The 60-year old has quite a bit of coaching experience in the men's code, where he had spent the majority of his time prior to the move into the Ladies game. He has had coaching roles with Mayo, Cavan, and Roscommon at inter-county level, having also been involved with the likes of St Brigid's and Athlone in the club game.

Ardnaree Sarsfields will compete in the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship later this year, having been at that level for a decade since their promotion from junior in 2015. The club have yet to win a county title in the second tier since their foundation over 75 years ago.
