“At Michele’s Side”: Piemontese Defends Governor After Threats Over Break with Israel

Michele Emiliano 's decision to suspend all institutional and commercial relations between the Puglia Region and the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu has generated strong reactions and, unfortunately, threats. The one to take a stand in the last few hours was the vice president of the Region and councilor for Health Raffaele Piemontese , who with a message on social media wanted to show full support for the president of Puglia.

“The freedom of a political personality will not be intimidated,” wrote Piemontese, who spoke of Emiliano’s clear and courageous stance. “The strength of an institutional man,” he added, “will not bend before the threats received following the decision to suspend all relations with Israel.”

A political gesture that sparks discussion

Emiliano's choice came in recent days and was motivated by the need, according to the president, to dissociate himself from the actions of the Netanyahu government in the Middle East, particularly in the management of the ongoing war in Gaza. A choice that immediately sparked debate, receiving consensus, criticism and, apparently, even intimidating reactions.

“Emiliano’s smile and generosity will never fade,” Piemontese assured in his post, which recalls not only the institutional firmness but also a more personal dimension of the governor of Puglia. “Friendship and human solidarity will help keep alive the smile and generosity with which Michele Emiliano faces every battle,” he wrote.

A political and human message

He concludes with a call to daily commitment: “To work and to the common struggle, Michele”. An expression that aims to underline the compactness of the regional council around its president and the determination not to retreat, even in the face of threats.

Raffaele Piemontese's words come at a particularly delicate time for the Italian political debate, in which positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are taking on an increasingly significant weight in the choices of local administrations. The Apulian affair, with its institutional and human implications, confirms how the international conflict is also producing effects on the level of internal political confrontation.
