Foggia, an area for Muslim deceased does not divide. "It is civility, not concession"

“ More than ghettoization: here there is only respect. And those who oppose it, evidently, need enemies to feel like someone”. This is what the municipal councilor of the political group “Cambia”, Nunzio Angiola, says after the motion in Foggia to allocate an area of ​​the cemetery to the deceased of Muslim religion.

Fratelli d'Italia councilor Gino Fusco speaks of "ghettoization disguised as integration" . "Do you know what you're talking about?" Angiola says in response. "Because allocating a cemetery area to the deceased of Islamic religion is neither a favor nor a political concession: it is an act of civilization, already adopted in many Italian cities, starting from Bari, where the area reserved for Muslims has existed since 2006, up to Gioia del Colle, where it was established in 2023 with a unanimous vote of the City Council, including representatives of the center-right.

Those who today cry out 'scandal' or 'separation' perhaps do so because they need to stoke fears. But the truth is simple: allowing each person to be buried according to their own rite does not divide, does not separate, does not ghettoize - it recognizes. And recognizing does not mean giving up anything: it means affirming that our society is mature, strong, capable of welcoming without annulling itself.

Those who speak of 'easy consensus' perhaps confuse inclusion with the propaganda they themselves make, seeking visibility on the backs of others. We instead believe that respect for differences is the first step to building real coexistence. And that even in death, the dignity of the person must be honored, without distinctions between first-class and second-class citizens. Those who oppose all this do not defend identity - concludes Angiola -: they empty it, they reduce it to fear. We prefer to build a community. Even in the silence of cemeteries, where the degree of civilization of a people is measured”.
