Foggia, prisoner tries to escape outside the courthouse: three prison officers injured

Foggia, prisoner tries to escape outside the courthouse: three prison officers injured

New episode of violence inside the Foggia prison circuit. This morning, around 10:30 , a young prisoner originally from the province , attempted to escape at the exit of the Foggia courthouse , while he was about to be transferred to the prison police van after a hearing.

According to SAPPE (Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police), the prisoner – still handcuffed – violently hit a first officer in the face, causing a bleeding cut , then lunged at a second policeman, injuring his hands. Only the intervention of the third officer , who blocked the young man by grabbing him by the neck despite having been hit several times in the stomach, prevented the escape and further consequences .

Two of the three officers were taken to hospital for treatment. SAPPE points out that the same prisoner had already attacked another police officer in recent weeks , punching him in the head.

The union's complaint

“We thank the three officers who, despite being injured, showed courage and composure , preventing the escape attempt from degenerating,” said Federico Pilagatti , national secretary of SAPPE, in a statement. “The prison in Foggia continues to be one of the most overcrowded in Italy , with an unsustainable number of inmates compared to the staff on duty. Urgent and extraordinary interventions are needed by the DAP to guarantee safety and dignity to those who risk their lives on duty every day.”

The union is calling for an immediate strengthening of the staff and a prison deflation plan for the Foggia prison, which is defined as " now exhausted ". A cry of alarm that adds to the numerous complaints already launched in recent months, in the face of an increasingly difficult climate within the penitentiary.
