"It is with deep sorrow that I learn of the passing of Mario Candotto, a hero of the Resistance and a tireless witness to the Holocaust," wrote Sebastiano Badin, secretary of the Italian Left for Friuli Venezia Giulia, in a statement. Candotto was 99 years old and lived in Ronchi dei Legionari (Gorizia). Born in Porpetto (Udine), he had been a construction worker in Monfalcone. In 1944, he was deported by the Nazis to Dachau, the same concentration camp where his father died; his mother died in Auschwitz.
