Peace and one Easter for Christians

Pope Leo XIV in the audience in the Vatican with the participants of the symposium on the 1700 years of the Council of Nicaea

This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea. Pope Francis was supposed to go to Nicea, but now the appointment is on the new Pontiff's agenda. A symbolic journey, full of many meanings, first and foremost the ecumenical one. Yesterday, Pope Leo XIV received the participants in the conference for the anniversary of the council in Rome and hoped for an agreement between the Christian Churches to celebrate Easter on the same day: "The differences in their respective calendars no longer allow Christians to celebrate together the most important feast of the liturgical year, causing pastoral problems within communities, dividing families and weakening the credibility of our testimony of the Gospel" remarked Leone. These are not new words, but they acquire an important meaning in this particular historical moment, where wars and conflicts (which have political, historical, but also religious roots) are intensifying. It is part of a desire for unity that comes from afar and that it is right to reaffirm.
Because the desire for unity is not only a question of faith that concerns Christian communities. It is from the ecumenical dialogue between churches and various religions that peace also passes.
