San Donato, the streets in the dark: everything is turned off near the hospital. Breakdowns in succession for five months

Arezzo, May 14, 2025 – The streets at the hospital are completely dark. It happened again on Monday, May 12, when both Via Nenni and the part of the street in front of the entrance to San Donato were left without lighting. Ivo Brocchi reported the outage in a video made for Radio Fly, which has been making a battle out of it on its microphones for the past five months.
"It's not the first time it's happened, we've been contacting the streetlight assistance for months, we've reported the incident to the competent councilors, just like we did on Monday by calling the municipal police," says Ivo Brocchi, director of Radio Fly. He's the one who personally documented the condition of the road with a video.
"I am in front of the hospital's Cup - he shows with the images recorded at 10 pm on May 12 - the road in front of the parking lot has been completely dark since Monday, May 12. It has gone to keep company with Via Nenni which has darkened even more compared to the last few days. We are completely in the dark, facing a dangerous situation, it is dark even in the semicircle in front of the hospital".
The only lights, Brocchi reports, are the lights on the trees; the entrance to the hospital is lit up but the rest appears completely off.
"It's really crazy," comments Ivo Brocchi. "It's all dark, I'd like to know if anyone noticed. Even the only streetlight on the sidewalk has disappeared, I'm trying to walk toward the traffic light but it's difficult. Even the four lanes of the road are completely dark, it looks like a storm has passed and the electricity has gone out in a neighborhood."
The images recorded for the Radio Fly broadcast continue when Brocchi tries to reach the traffic light and gain entry in front of the emergency room.
"I'll call the municipal police to warn them," he continues, "The only headlights are those of the cars passing by, it's dark even in via Nenni up to the roundabout on the ring road and next to the helicopter pad. The only light is the one coming from the traffic light. The light starts again from the entrance to the emergency room onwards."
The street lighting then restarts towards the San Donato neighborhood in the upper part of via de Gasperi. The documented situation was filmed at 10 pm on Monday 12 May. But it is not the first time that the neighborhood and the hospital area remain in the dark, so much so that Radio Fly has repeatedly denounced the situation and the danger for passers-by. Be they pedestrians, cyclists or cars.
"The problem has been going on since mid-December 2024 - explains the director of the Arezzo broadcaster - but until Monday evening it was limited to the stretch of sidewalk and the road that goes from the helipad to the entrance of San Donato, which in 5 months has been left in the dark many times". Radio Fly through the voices of Ivo Brocchi and Giuseppe Misuri, has also repeatedly denounced the excessively slow restoration times.
«By law, the streets must be lit, and in the evening at 9 pm the main entrance to the hospital is closed and those leaving must pass through the emergency room and reach the multi-storey car park along a road that is completely in the dark.
On Monday, the area left without electricity was larger than usual, including the area of via Giovanni XXIII, via Nenni and half of via de Gasperi, perhaps due to a larger fault. Walking through here is dangerous and the thing that makes you angry is that the problem has been going on for five months now. A stretch of cycle path also remained in the dark".
The Municipality of Arezzo has long been aware of the poor service affecting the area of the San Donato hospital. Right here where for five months now the street light has been on and off and the breakdowns in the public lighting system are rife.
And every time the technicians intervene, the problems reappear punctually always in the same stretch of road.
From via Nenni to via de Gasperi, an entire neighborhood sees the public light working intermittently. The municipal administration for its part, has repeatedly requested the intervention of technicians from the competent company Edison.
"The streetlights in that stretch often go out even a short distance from being restored - explains the councilor of the Municipality of Arezzo Alessandro Casi - the Municipality has already written to Edison, which manages the public lighting, several times. After this new report of failures, I contacted the manager again because the problem is not only the urgency of restoring the light. In fact, there is the need to finally understand and resolve the problem that is at the root of the disservice. As if there were some short circuit or some contact that promptly causes the lighting to go haywire, leaving the area in the dark. Yesterday the company responded that there is a team working right in the area, the problem would be the manholes where there are connections. We are waiting for updates". The problem concerns the safety of pedestrians forced to grope in the dark after sunset, as well as cyclists or motorists. The only headlights in the night are those of passing cars and traffic lights.
