Schlein: "The mafia is changing its skin, keep your guard up."

"It's essential to be here, not only to commemorate the event but also to continue the daily commitment needed to combat every manifestation of the mafia phenomenon, which unfortunately remains alive and present in our society." This was stated by Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein, on Via D'Amelio in Palermo to commemorate Paolo Borsellino and his bodyguards killed by the mafia 33 years ago.
"Just think of the arson attacks on confiscated properties in Calabria in recent weeks," Schlein added. "The Calabrian Democratic Party visited the cooperatives that were hit by mafia attacks just yesterday. Every day, we must continue our commitment in every way possible against the mafia, against its infiltration of the economy and politics; unfortunately, the interest remains strong. The mafia phenomenon is changing, but it is still present, and it's not that when it doesn't shoot or plant bombs, it is less present and should be underestimated. Precisely when investments arrive, we must raise our guard and use all legal instruments," the Democratic Party leader emphasized. "The fight against the mafia phenomenon is carried out both by supporting the work of law enforcement and the judiciary that deals with it on a daily basis, and by engaging in prevention, that is, by preventing the mafia from getting there before the state and taking root where there is social injustice, where there is a lack of opportunity. This is why prevention work must be done through culture and starting in schools."
