Sicily, Death Threats to Region President Schifani

Sicily, Death Threats to Region President Schifani

(Adnkronos) – Death threats to the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani. As Adnkronos has learned, the governor received, at his home, a threatening letter, written in pen in which unknown persons wrote, in block letters: "You will burn in your burners". The letter containing death threats was intercepted a few weeks ago by the escort agents of the President of the Region, who immediately informed the Digos of the Police Headquarters. More recently, however, other death threats have arrived. This time by phone.

Unknown people called with a disguised voice to the secretariat of the presidency of the Region and seriously threatened both the governor and the members of his family. In one of the phone calls received at Palazzo d'Orleans, the disguised voice said: "The crack is suffering to your Schifani family".

Just recently, the ARS approved the anti-crack bill. For Schifani, "a decisive step for the protection of new generations and to combat the destructive phenomenon of narcotics". "With this measure, the Region is committed not only to prevention, but also to guaranteeing treatment and social reintegration paths for those who fall victim to drugs. The funding of over 23 million euros in the three-year period that my government has guaranteed represents a concrete demonstration of responsibility and commitment by the institutions, which is added to the other resources allocated at the beginning of the year for the creation of the first emergency reception center in Palermo", added the President of the Region, Renato Schifani, commenting on the approval by the ARS of the anti-crack law. On the threats to Schifani, the Palermo Prosecutor's Office, directed by Maurizio de Lucia, has opened an investigation to trace the author of the threatening letter and the authors of the threatening phone calls received at Palazzo d'Orleans, which were recorded. The investigation is being conducted by the Digos of the Palermo Police Headquarters.

Investigators are convinced that the threatening letter refers to the start-up of waste-to-energy plants in Sicily. A short time ago, President Schifani announced that Invitalia has published the tender for the technical-economic feasibility design of the two waste-to-energy plants to be built in Palermo and Catania, “according to the agreement we signed last January, delegating the management of the entire tender procedure for the construction of the two plants to the national structure”. “Another step forward towards an epochal goal that will allow Sicily to say goodbye to landfills and avoid the costly shipment of waste abroad. We are proceeding quickly according to the timetable we have given ourselves”, the governor said.

Schifani, who is the extraordinary commissioner for the completion of the integrated waste management plant network, had announced the publication, by Invitalia, on the digital platform “InGate” and in the Official Journal of the European Union of the open procedure notice for the assignment of engineering and architectural services relating to the technical-economic feasibility study (PFTE), safety coordination during the design phase, drafting of the geological report and the preliminary economic-financial plan (PEF). The tender also includes the option of assigning the services of construction management and safety coordination during the execution phase for each of the two plants to be built in Bellolampo, Palermo, and in the industrial area of Catania, sites already identified by the Regional Waste Plan.
