Taranto's Wild West: A street shooting in the Tamburi neighborhood leaves one dead and three injured, including a father and son.
The ambush
At least ten shots were fired overnight in the area known as the parking houses. A 20-year-old was seriously injured; the victim is his 45-year-old father.
A deadly street attack and gunfire in the dead of night left many dead and wounded in Taranto . Wild West-like scenes erupted in the Tamburi neighborhood, where a gunfight presumably stemmed from drug dealing, but the investigation is ongoing. Currently, one person is dead and three injured, although one is in serious condition. State Police patrols responded to the scene, supported by the Carabinieri, local police, and forensic personnel, who conducted the necessary investigations.
The shooting occurred on Via Machiavelli, in the Tamburi neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, shortly before 10:00 PM. The procession dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine was just concluding. The area is known as the "parking houses," and has been the subject of several news stories in the past. According to initial reports, the victim and the injured were the targets of a street ambush . Initial rumors that a minor was involved in the raid have been denied.
Carmelo Nigro , 45, died shortly after arriving at the emergency room. His son , Michael Nigro , 20, was seriously injured and admitted to intensive care with a guarded prognosis. Pietro Caforio, 24, is in serious condition, while Vincenzo Fago, 65, was wounded in the right leg. Numerous 7.65 caliber shells were fired at the scene, estimated at least ten rounds . According to Buonasera 24 Taranto , the most seriously injured person was hit in the head, while another person was reportedly hit by at least one bullet in the right leg.
No leads have been ruled out at this time; law enforcement has immediately launched an investigation to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the incident and identify the perpetrators of the attack. In mid-December 2020, another shooting occurred in the same area as the parking houses. A 39-year-old man from Palagianello died in that incident, attacked with a club and shot in the chest. The investigation led to drug dealing in the area.
