TOURISM/ Italy brings the WTTC Global Summit back to Europe

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit will be held in Rome in September. This is an important recognition for the country.
Italy's travel and hospitality industry is experiencing a record year, with international visitor spending set to reach an all-time high of €60.4 billion in 2025, according to new data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
The sector is booming. After a strong recovery from the pandemic, Italy is on the rise, consolidating its position as the fourth most popular destination in Europe and a global powerhouse in wellness, luxury, culture, and gastronomy.
According to WTTC's latest Economic Impact Assessment (EIR), the sector is on track to support 3.2 million jobs in 2025—100,000 more than last year—and contribute €237.4 billion to the Italian economy, equivalent to nearly 11% of GDP. Domestic tourism remains robust, with expected spending of €124.6 billion.
"In September, the world will celebrate the great beauty of tourism and Italy," said Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè. "And where else but in Rome could the first WTTC in our country be held (thanks to the Ministry of Tourism, ENIT, the Municipality of Rome, and the Lazio Region, at the Parco della Musica Auditorium from September 28 to 30)? Here, the great beauty can be seen, but above all, it can be breathed. It is the most beautiful postcard of a region rich in culture, history, and tourist treasures large and small.
It's an honor for us to host such a prestigious event, but it's equally honorable for the participants to be present. We've brought the world's largest tourism event back to Europe after six years: the WTTC Global Summit, which features the industry's top international leaders, represents a significant moment for the sector and for Italy. It's a testament to how much we've regained ground and returned to being a key player on the global stage, so much so that we can boast the honor and privilege of hosting such prestigious events.
Especially in an already exciting year for Italian tourism, with the ongoing Jubilee and the record numbers we're recording, the summit further propels our capital and our nation toward continued growth. It's a unique opportunity to network and create new synergies between operators, associations, and institutions, developing the product, offerings, and potential of our tourism ecosystem. And, ultimately, to be increasingly competitive and successful.
“Italy is back at the top of travelers' wish lists, and for good reason,” said Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC. “From the timeless beauty of Rome to the elegance of its coasts and countryside, Italy offers a unique experience, rich in history, culture, and refined luxury. This record-breaking growth is a testament to the strength of Italy's travel and tourism industry and the passion of the people who make it possible. Our Global Summit in Rome will bring together the leaders who are shaping the future, from ministers and CEOs to innovators and sustainability advocates. Italy continues to be a model of how the industry can be a driver of prosperity, cultural pride, and sustainable growth.”
Since 2021, Italy has stood out among European and G20 countries for having a dedicated Ministry of Tourism, a sign of recognition of the sector's economic and social value. The Italian government has also prioritized sustainability , innovation, and skills, launching new national campaigns to encourage travelers to discover lesser-known destinations, spreading the benefits of tourism more fairly and responsibly.
"As Italy prepares to host the 25th WTTC Global Summit," said Manfredi Lefebvre, Executive Chairman of AKTG, Abercrombie & Kent, and Crystal Cruises and Chairman-designate of WTTC, "we celebrate not only our remarkable recovery from the pandemic, but also the vibrant future of our tourism sector. This growth is a testament to our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the shared passion of our communities. Together, we will continue to build a thriving and culturally rich experience for travelers around the world."
Last year, the sector contributed €228.5 billion to the Italian economy and supported 3.1 million jobs. Domestic spending reached €122.6 billion, while international visitor spending stood at €55.2 billion. "With the right investments in connectivity, skills, and promotion," the ministry states, "Italy is poised to become the European model for tourism-based growth." The WTTC forecasts that the sector will contribute €282.6 billion to the Italian economy by 2035—equivalent to 12.2% of GDP—and support 3.7 million jobs. International visitor spending is expected to reach €78 billion, while domestic spending will reach €142.5 billion.
