Tourist tax revenue expected to exceed €7 million in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Tourist tax revenues continue to rise in the municipalities of Friuli Venezia Giulia. According to the latest study by the Fondazione Think Tank Nord Est, conducted on municipal budgets, revenue will reach €7.3 million in 2025. However, the Foundation explains, a higher amount is expected during the reporting phase, as municipalities often report conservative figures in their planning documents.
The increase in revenue is driven by the increased number of tourists, but also by the increase in the number of municipalities where the tax is paid. In fact, since 2025, 16 municipalities in Friuli Venezia Giulia have introduced it: two more than last year, with the new addition of Udine and the return of Duino Aurisina (where it was suspended in 2020).
The largest share of the funds will go to the capital Trieste, with revenue expected to reach €2.7 million in 2025. The seaside resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro is next in line with the expected €2 million, while Grado is expected to generate €1 million. The tourist tax in Udine went into effect on February 1, 2025, and revenues of €650,000 are expected. Tarvisio expects to collect €280,000, Aquileia €132,000, Muggia and Duino Aurisina €100,000, Cividale del Friuli €75,000, Forni di Sopra €60,000, Palmanova €55,000, Arta Terme €40,000, Forni Avoltri €33,000, Sutrio €30,000, Ravascletto €24,000, and Sauris €23,000.
As for the final figures, 2024 saw the highest ever revenue, with almost 6.5 million euros in total, an 8.2% increase compared to 2023, when it reached 6 million euros.
In 2024, the highest revenue was recorded in Trieste, with €2,355,714, a 9.7% increase over the previous year. Lignano Sabbiadoro reported revenues of €2,138,777, in line with 2023. Grado, on the other hand, generated revenues of €1,120,000, a 4.6% increase over 2023. Aquileia collected €133,050, a slight decrease from 2023 (-7.3%). Revenues in Tarvisio (€287,652), Muggia (€106,977), Cividale del Friuli (€81,352), and Palmanova (€47,721) are far higher than the previous year, as the tax was introduced late in 2023 (May for Tarvisio, July for Muggia, October for Cividale del Friuli, August for Palmanova). Finally, in 2024, the tourist tax brought in €54,655 in Forni di Sopra (-13.1% compared to 2023), €52,898 in Arta Terme (+4.1%), €35,038 in Sutrio (+8.8%), €28,479 in Forni Avoltri (-11.6%), €25,814 in Sauris (+12.2%), and €22,007 in Ravascletto (-16.8%).
"The growth of Friuli Venezia Giulia's attractiveness also depends on tourism development," says Antonio Simeoni , vice president of the Fondazione Think Tank Nord Est, "and for this reason, dedicated resources, such as those collected by accommodation providers through the tourist tax, are useful. Each locality must carefully evaluate, together with tourism operators, how to use this revenue, in order to effectively enhance the local tourism ecosystem based on a shared vision. In any case, it is essential to guarantee quality services," concludes Simeoni , "as a prerequisite for tourism attractiveness, as well as for the benefit of communities and businesses."
