Second day of tension in the Californian metropolis
(LaPresse) - After federal immigration authorities arrested dozens of people across Los Angeles, protesters took to the streets to demand their release. Police in riot gear responded with tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. U.S. immigration authorities have expanded their operations in the Los Angeles area following protests at a federal detention center and a police response that included tear gas, stun grenades and the arrest of a union leader. Border Patrol personnel in riot gear and gas masks stood guard Saturday outside an industrial park in the city of Paramount, firing tear gas as bystanders and protesters gathered on sidewalks and across the street, taunting officials and recording the events on smartphones. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons criticized the local police response and accused Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of supporting lawlessness. The Trump administration is ramping up immigration arrests.
