Tumors, Mazzeo (Pd): "The task of institutions is to always have the person at the center"

On the occasion of the Pisa stage of the Giro d'Italia, the 'Manifesto for the humanization of oncology care' was signed
"We live in a time in which selfishness has grown and the task of those who represent the institutions is to always try to have the person at the center. I joined this initiative because I want to bring the voice of Tuscany in this sense". This is what Antonio Mazzeo, president of the Tuscany Regional Council, told Adnkronos Salute, on the occasion of the Pisa stage of the awareness tour on urothelial cancer and oncological pathologies 'Non girarci intorno', promoted by Merck on the occasion of the Giro d'Italia.
During the Pisa stop, Mazzeo signed the 'Manifesto for the humanization of oncology care', created by Merck in collaboration with the patient associations Ailar, Walce and Palinuro and with leading clinicians in the oncology field. "We are a land that is already carrying forward part of what is written in this manifesto - explained the president - I am thinking of network management to guarantee equity of care for everyone: there is no difference between a child born in a small village and someone who lives in a big city. I am thinking of psycho-oncology, of the investments we have made in this sense, of the hospital oncology day hospitals that are in all the hospitals of this territorial company. Why? Because the goal is to put the person at the center, the care, the possibility of being able to have rapid, simplified and quality access".
And speaking of prevention and awareness initiatives such as 'Non girarci intorno', sponsored by Fiaso (Italian Federation of Health and Hospital Companies), Simg (Italian Society of General Practitioners and Primary Care), Siuro (Italian Society of Uro-Oncology) and Associazione Palinuro (Patients free from urothelial neoplasia), Mazzeo added: "We need to send a message. If we want better healthcare we need to invest in prevention. We invest in prevention in many ways, one is to go among the people, in the squares, to make them understand what it means to participate in screening, to make them understand the value, the meaning of anticipating the problem that could arise. Unfortunately, culturally this is not always the case and therefore initiatives like these need to be supported, valued and the institutions need to be present".
