Bitchat: a messaging app without internet or a SIM card. The Twitter founder's million-dollar idea.

Bitchat: a messaging app without internet or a SIM card. The Twitter founder's million-dollar idea.

BitChat challenges WhatsApp, Telegram , and other popular messaging apps. The service, created by Twitter (now X) founder Jack Dorsey , allows you to chat without an active Internet connection. All you need is Bluetooth . Data travels from one device to another until it reaches the recipient of the message via a p2p (peer-to-peer) connection and without the need for a central server. The project, whose code has been published on GitHub , is still in its early stages but is already being tested on Apple 's TestFight . The developers are also reportedly planning an Android version.

BitChat also offers the advantage of requiring no registration, and data is neither saved nor shared with third parties. Each time you log in, a random ID is generated, which is then deleted when you close the app. Protection is also guaranteed by end-to-end encryption . "Privacy isn't just a feature, it's the whole point," Jack Dorsey 's manifesto reads. " Bitchat proves that modern communication doesn't require giving up privacy. No accounts, no servers, no surveillance. Just people talking freely."

BitChat 's only flaw is its range. Currently, it's only possible to communicate directly with people within a 200-meter radius. If the user isn't close enough, the message will remain pending until they're able to receive it. This problem should be partially solved in the future with the adoption of WiFi Direct , which allows devices to connect to Wi-Fi without a router or wireless network connecting them. However, other technologies, such as ultrasonic communication and transport bonding , are also being studied.
