The Old Guard 3: Everything We Know (So Far)

It took five years, but The Old Guard 2 is finally here. The Netflix action film starring Charlize Theron as an immortal mercenary returned with Uma Thurman as the new villain, Henry Golding as a wise sage, and Victoria Mahoney (Yelling to the Sky) taking over directing duties from Gina Prince-Bythewood. The result? Equally as mixed as the first film. But as creator Greg Rucka told Polygon five years ago about the new sequel, "You want another one? Here’s a way to get into it."
For The Old Guard crew, it doesn’t seem that lukewarm reviews will stop the streamer from finishing out the trilogy. 78 million viewers watched The Old Guard in its first four weeks of release, according to Variety. The original was also in the "Global Top 10 Movies" on Netflix the week before the sequel's release.
Viewership numbers are not yet available for The Old Guard 2, but critical reception is looking even worse this time around. Film critic Robert Daniels wrote for Roger Ebert that, "it doesn’t appear that [the cast] managed to concentrate long enough to make a worthwhile movie." And despite the marquee pairing of Theron and Thurman, Brandon Yu remarked in The New York Times that, "it’s a shame how little [Thurman] and Theron actually show up together onscreen."
Yet, the final moments of The Old Guard 2 suggest that the story is far from finished. As Theron’s character picks up the pieces from the final battle, she vows to finish off Thurman's new villain and save her team in a way that suggests The Old Guard 3 will tell the second-half of a two-part sequel.
"There is a complete three-part story that can be told," Rucka told Looper during the production of the sequel. "God willing, if it’s a success, Netflix comes back and says, 'Hey, let’s do it again.' There’s more to tell, and there are questions that we want to answer."
