Arezzo, May 10, 2025 – Attack on Fanfani. Ceccarelli and De Robertis (Pd): “Torselli should reread the Constitution. Fanfani is right to demand decisive measures for Sollicciano”

“We would like to suggest to MEP Torselli to reread Article 27, paragraph 3, of the Constitution, which states: Punishments cannot consist of treatments contrary to the sense of humanity and must aim at the re-education of the convicted person. It is true that one does not end up in prison by drawing lots, but the Middle Ages are long gone and a civil state has the duty to do everything possible to guarantee the re-educational function of punishment, for the good of prisoners, but also of civil society”.

Thus said the Democratic Party councillors in the Regional Council Vincenzo Ceccarelli and Lucia De Robertis, after the heavy criticism addressed by the MEP to the Guarantor of prisoners in Tuscany, Giuseppe Fanfani.

"As Pope Francis said, many times in life we find a hand that helps us lift ourselves up: we too must do it with others, with the experience that we have. And above all - we could add - we must do everything possible to ensure that prison does not become a place of torture, unbearable, as has been happening for years in Sollicciano or in other Tuscan prisons, where suicides follow one another with impressive numbers. The Guarantor did well - Ceccarelli and De Robertis continue - to reiterate with strong words the gravity of the situation, in the face of an announcement by Undersecretary Dal Mastro that shows how far the current Government is from perceiving the gravity of the problem. Significant investments are needed, to build civil prisons and tear down uncivil ones like Sollicciano has become."
