Citizenship: the decree law passes with a large majority

The Chamber of Deputies has definitively approved the decree law on citizenship with 137 votes in favor, 83 against and 2 abstentions. The measure, which is composed of 4 articles, introduces a preclusion to the automatic acquisition of citizenship for those born abroad with another citizenship, except for specific exceptions. The law provides for a restriction on dual citizenship and that Italian descendants born abroad can have an Italian passport by ' ius sanguinis' only up to two generations, that is, not beyond one parent or grandparent born in Italy.
Important changes were made in the Senate, including the extension of the deadlines for some applications, new provisions for minors, the introduction of a two-year residency requirement for children of Italian citizens, and the elimination of the possibility of extending up to thirty-six months for some proceedings.
Furthermore, the evidence in disputes is addressed and the possibility of subordinate work outside the quota is opened up for descendants of Italian citizens and citizens of countries with a high level of Italian emigration.
