Fadlun (Jewish Community of Rome): “Today’s square in Rome is anti-Semitic. We were not invited, fortunately”

Wide field for gaza

In Piazza San Giovanni between slogans on genocide and risks of anti-Semitism. The president of the Jewish community of Rome: "We appreciate those on the left who oppose the pro-Pal imbalance of Schlein and Conte"

On the same topic:

In the end, it is not even that important that Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, is not present at the Pd, M5s and Avs square for Gaza . Because even those who will go, like the journalist Rula Jebreal or Luisa Morgantini, president of the Assopacepalestina association, or the historian Anna Foa, Gad Lerner, the former Palestinian minister Atef Abu Saif, think and say more or less the same things: there is no doubt that what is happening in the Middle East is a “genocide”.

Also for this reason, despite Elly Schlein herself asking her allies to stay within the perimeter of the motion presented in Parliament, more than one doubtful and perplexed voice has been raised in the last few hours. As Victor Fadlun, president of the Jewish community of Rome, bluntly says to Il Foglio, “ the risk of anti-Semitic drift is evident in a square that ‘forgets’ or even denies three fundamental facts of truth: the terrorist nature of Hamas, the fact that dozens of kidnapped Jews and Israelis are still in Gaza, and the genocidal intent behind slogans such as ‘Free Palestine from the river to the sea’ for which Israel should be erased from the maps ”. It is a bit the same reason that makes President Fadlun say he “appreciates those on the left who oppose the pro-PAL imbalance of Schlein and Conte”.

Proof of the attempt to rebalance this imbalance was seen yesterday in Milan, at the Franco Parenti Theater, with Renzi and Calenda who wanted to clear the double flag, Israeli and Palestinian, putting Netanyahu's government in the dock, but recalling all the responsibilities of the Hamas terrorists. In the end, isn't it perhaps a rather eloquent signal in itself that the center-left had to split due to the inability to share transversal appeals against anti-Semitism? "It is a signal that demonstrates the real intentions of those who will go to demonstrate in that square. Avoiding condemning anti-Semitism and recognizing the terrorist origins of Hamas is in itself anti-Semitism. Pure and simple", Fadlun then adds to Il Foglio. Even the president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI) Noemi Di Segni said yesterday that she was concerned "about the choice to defend only one people, the Palestinians, and not also the Israelis. With one flag and not with two. While we understand the spirit that moves the organizers, we express strong concern and believe it is our duty to highlight shortcomings and inconsistencies".

And so perhaps, regardless of whether Albanese will be there or not (“you’ll see he’ll be there in the end,” was the gossip among various parliamentarians yesterday. But his name is not on the list of scheduled speeches), it is clear how frivolous the proposal to have the various Jewish communities in the square was. They would have found themselves in a context in which, despite all possible distinctions, the definition of “genocide” will be cleared even from the main stage, in the speeches that will resound throughout Piazza San Giovanni and beyond. “ Luckily we weren’t invited. But even if we were invited, we wouldn’t have gone,” President Fadlun concludes with evident bitterness. “Our hope is that the anti-Semitic square will give way to a balanced and truly dialoguing ‘square’.” It’s hard to imagine, given the day’s menu.
