Majority and opposition clash over Security Decree and Gaza crisis

On May 29, 2025, the Chamber of Deputies gave the final green light to the Security Decree 2025 (DL n. 48/2025) with a vote of confidence (201 in favor, 117 against). The measure, published in the Official Journal on April 11, introduces harsher penalties for illegal occupations, roadblocks and terrorism-related crimes, such as possession of material for violent acts (imprisonment from 2 to 6 years). It strengthens protections for law enforcement, covering legal costs of up to 10,000 euros, and tightens rules on organized crime and prison management. Criticized for the use of emergency decrees, he is accused of limiting freedom of protest. There is also an open discussion between the majority and opposition on the crisis in Gaza.
