THERE'S NO ENCOUNTER WITHOUT A TRIPLE
Of the twenty-one admitted by the Guarantee Committee on September 16th, none other than the former prime minister reached the finish line. The election, which was intended to confirm the Movement's internal democracy, has become a notarial deed. One is worth one, of course.

There's no audience without an audience, and no election without rivals. But in the Five Star Movement, at 4:00 PM last Monday, the clock struck a different ending: there will be only one candidate in the elections for the new president of the Five Star Movement. Giuseppe Conte, who won twice and will also win three times . He alone has found five hundred people ready to support his candidacy. The deadline was set for September 22nd: five hundred signatures to collect and deliver to stay in the running for the presidency of the Movement. A modest figure, no more than the size of a provincial theater. Yet of the twenty-one admitted by the Guarantee Committee on September 16th, none other than Conte has reached the finish line.
The others, who had already gone from the initial seventy-seven self-candidacies to the sifting through twenty-one, stopped there. There was Signora Maria, who wrote "Here I am" like Mary of Nazareth, and who perhaps gathered the parish choir, but no more. Jack Cardigan, a singer-songwriter from Bologna, didn't get past the circle of friends from the music club. A former municipal candidate gathered his cousins and soccer teammates, but didn't reach the five hundred mark. Pensioners without photos gave up after a few attempts, and resumes studded with ellipses failed to convince even the most sympathetic signatories. No one reached the required number. Five hundred signatures isn't a lot: the crowd at a promotion match, a small Facebook group, a successful school event. Yet, for the twenty aspiring presidents, they were an insurmountable mountain. The election that was meant to confirm the Movement's internal democracy has become a notarial deed. One is worth one, of course. But by 4 PM on Monday, the only one who mattered was him: Giuseppe Conte. "It will proceed by acclamation." Really?
