Schlein and Conte, each for himself. And they take notes on the German vote

The former prime minister accuses the secretary of the Democratic Party of thinking about strengthening her party, not the alliance. Tensions also with Avs, due to the pacifism of the M5s. And among the Democrats there are those, like the mayors, who ask to address the immigration issue

What remains of the former broad field risks falling apart even more. Now it's "break ranks". Giuseppe Conte is going straight down his path and has no intention of softening the platform of the April 5 demonstration to allow Elly Schlein to participate in the initiative without starting a controversy within the party where the reformists are increasingly fed up with the unruly 5 Star ally. To the Democratic bridge builders who asked him to smooth out the corners and return to closer relations, the former Prime Minister objected with a few words: Elly, in fact, is not dealing with the alliance but only with the Democratic Party, think about strengthening it and I will do the same with the Movement.
Even the red-greens of Avs are champing at the bit. They fear that Giuseppe Conte's activism, especially in the field of left-wing pacifism, will take votes away from their formation. For this reason, the duo Nicola Fratoianni-Angelo Bonelli also intend to put in place some markedly identity-based initiatives. The first warning signs came a few days ago, when Fratoianni opened up to the property tax, not the European one like Schlein and Conte, but to an all-Italian property tax. And those in Avs say that those words will not remain a dead letter.
For all these reasons there is a certain nervousness in the Democratic Party. What is being accused of the secretary, even by those who do not have a great feeling with the 5 Star Movement, is of having been disinterested in the alliance, of not having tried to create the conditions for a control room of the center-left, thus allowing all the contradictions of that area to explode . According to the detractors of the Democratic Party leader, the fact of not taking a position often and willingly so as not to compromise relations with future partners has not served to restore serenity in the center-left, indeed it has caused the opposition to fray even further. There is also another argument that is raising alarm among Democratic parliamentarians. Looking at the vote in Germany , and the resounding defeat of the SPD, the Democrats have begun to take stock. A part of the vote of the German Social Democrats, especially in Eastern Germany, went straight to the AfD. This, the Democrats reason, is above all due to the problem of immigration. Besides, some time ago Elly Schlein's spin doctors had already suggested to the secretary to avoid the topic as much as possible, to focus on healthcare, the high cost of bills, but to leave aside the ius soli precisely so as not to alienate other consensus. Especially since Giuseppe Conte, in constant competition with the Democratic Party, had not signed the referendum on citizenship promoted by +Europa.
But if Schlein's spin doctors advise her not to tackle the delicate issue of immigration, a part of her party (the mayors, but not only them) is asking the leader to instead make "credible" proposals (Dario Nardella called them that in an interview published yesterday by Corriere della Sera) in this field and not to entrust the initiative only to the right. Now, after the German vote, that part of the party that was pushing in this direction would like to step on the accelerator . The meeting called for Thursday by Elly Schlein could therefore be the occasion for an internal clarification on various fronts. It should, of course, because when it comes to the Democratic Party, the conditional is a must, given that in the end party reasons prevail and silence is preferred to discussion and, perhaps, opposition.
