Sicily Towards Independence: A Historic Referendum Coming Soon

The anniversary of the Sicilian Statute marks a turning point in the history of the island. The request for authorization to collect the signatures needed to call a popular initiative referendum for the independence of Sicily has been filed with the Sicilian Regional Assembly (Ars). This event represents an idea that dates back to the immediate post-war period, when the Movement for the Independence of Sicily (Mis) was born, which attempted to start a separatist insurrection with the formation of a paramilitary group in 1945.

The historical roots of independence

The granting of autonomy to Sicily, which occurred to counter secessionist pressures, made the island the first Italian region with a special statute. However, the promoters of the referendum claim that Sicily has been continuously stripped by regional and national politics. “It is time for Sicilians to regain their dignity as a people that they deserve,” they declare, underlining the importance of this historical moment. The request for a referendum is seen as a unique opportunity to reaffirm Sicilian identity and autonomy.

The Promotion Committee and the Road to Independence

The Committee of Ten, which has been working for months to prepare the request, is composed of members from different backgrounds, including the pitchfork movement. This group represents a variety of social, entrepreneurial and associative experiences, united by the desire to give voice to a collective desire for independence. Their initiative is not only a political act, but a call for the dignity and self-determination of the Sicilian people. The Constitutional Court will now have to evaluate the admissibility of the request, but the path to independence has already begun.
