"Reasons of political ineligibility." Piero Bitetti, the mayor of Taranto, resigned after protests during a meeting involving residents, committees, and activists regarding the former Ilva steelworks.
The meeting was organized ahead of tomorrow's single-issue City Council meeting to discuss the government's proposed decarbonization agreement. A summit is scheduled for July 31st at the Mimit. Bitetti, a center-left activist elected less than two months ago, has reportedly received threats from activists. According to local sources, the environmentalists—some of whom were masked—also prevented the mayor from leaving the City Hall, where the meeting was held . The movements also protested against Puglia's President Michele Emiliano.
In his letter of resignation filed with the Municipal Records Office, the mayor, it has been learned, cites a condition of "political unfitness." Bitetti has 20 days to revoke his resignation.
